Its next owner may opt to include weddings and other events in the mix of offerings, adding to its potential. The inn has natural gas heat and public sewer and water. Having undergone a long list of updates under current ownership, including the restoration of the historical murals in several first-floor rooms, it is ready to welcome guests. A COLORFUL 300-YEAR HISTORY....... In the BeginningBuilt from locally quarried stone in 1830 to serve as a substantial private residence for Asher Johnson (of the Johnson & Johnson family), the house was converted to a hotel in 1832. The railroad came through town in the 1850s, adding a new level of prosperity for Stockton. The inn was expanded around this time with a stone addition, and the fancy mansard roof and elaborate gingerbread trim on the front facade seen in early photos of the building are indicative of a mid- and late-19th-century design trends. The Middle YearsBy 1914, the inn had passed through various owners~ hands and was bought by the Weiss family, originally from France. In January 1920, Prohibition went into effect, and Elizabeth Weiss purchased the inn from her mother at auction. Elizabeth had married Joe Colligan, an artist and part-time bartender at the inn. They had five sons, many of whom played a role in running the inn over the next 60 years when it was known up and down the East Coast as ~Colligan~s~. During this time, the inn functioned as a hotel and a speakeasy known for its high-quality, locally produced spirits. Artist Joe Colligan commissioned his peers in the New Hope art colony across the river to paint the mural scenes that still adorn several first-floor rooms in the inn. RAD Miller, Robert A. Hogue, Kurt Wiese (illustrator for Zane Grey and Rudyard Kipling), John Follinsbee and most recently, muralist Illiya Barger all created, fine-tuned or restored these works that depict local scenes and the area~s history. It was during this time that the lavish Fox and Club Room additions and stunning waterfall at the inn~s rear gardens were built. The Golden YearsAfter Prohibition ended in 1933, Colligan~s became a mecca for talented musicians, writers, actors and artists. The inn and its rural setting inspired ~There's a Small Hotel (With a Wishing Well)" by songwriter Richard Rodgers and lyricist Lorenz Hart, which appeared in the 1936 Broadway hit, ~On Your Toes.~ ~Included in the sale price are the Stockton Inn proper, a stone carriage house, a stone wagon house, and the gardens with their famous wishing well, waterfall and pond, wine cave, outdoor bar, and dance floor ~ all under a roof. Inside the inn offers four fine dining rooms, six stone fireplaces, original and recently restored murals, and a liquor license for all three bars. Sale consists of three lots: one lot is a stone building with semi-finished space above, the Inn and outdoor space, a Victorian Home that needs to be torn down or a full renovation and outbuilding.... totally uninhabitable
